A hatchery bred "football" from the lower Umpqua This is the time of year when I offer conventional tackle trips for the finest eating salmon that swim! Lower Umpqua River Spring Chinook are showing up in good numbers now and will be available through early June, perhaps even later depending upon the annual moss bloom that occurs each year when the hours of daylight begin to increase. This week and next week I'm booked running "Springer" trips so I'll keep you posted on how we do. Over the weekend we saw good action and a bunch of fish hooked and caught. These fish will go into the 40 pound range and this season, quite a few in that size range have been caught. The "football" pictured here was a little gal that I took Saturday that weighted around 15 pounds. Summer Steelhead have arrived in fishable numbers to the upper willamette basin. As of the beginning of May, over 2,000 summer steelhead and more than 4,500 winter steelhead have crossed the falls at Oregon City. The past couple of days the fish are coming over the falls at around 100 fish per day. This is one the highest early counts of summer fish over the falls in the past several season! Current water conditions are ideal and I'm very optomistic for all of my trips in the coming weeks. As always I'll be offering folks jet boat and drift boat trips into some of the greatest steelhead fly water on the planet. And make no mistake about it, these are some of the hottest fish anywhere! They LOVE to crush a swung fly!!! If you've never had the opportunity to experience this fishery, get a hold of my quick! The openings I have now won't last long! Summer steelheading on the North Umpqua won't get under way until June. Smallmouth and Shad season on the lower Umpqua will also get underway in the coming weeks. The "Town Run"- Eugene and Springfields ultimate urban steelheaad fly fishing experience. McKenzie Trout, Umpqua Smallmouth Bass and Shad as well as many Southern Oregon coastal streams and estuarys for opportunities to catch Salmon on the fly. We offer you the option of choosing walk-in trips, or a boat trip from either a 16' Clackacraft fly-bench model McKenzie style driftboat or a powerboat trip from a 20' inboard jet-boat. Expert guide, Dean Finnerty, currently uses many different tried and proven fly rod techniques to get his clients into fish consistently. Dean and our guides will teach you what tactics, fly patterns and techniques that will work the best on any given day for the species you're after.
